Is Your GPS Tracker PTA Approved? How to Check (2026 Guide)

Home›Blog›Article

Nearly every car tracker company in Pakistan – including this one – advertises a "PTA approved" device. Almost none of them show you how to check that claim yourself. The good news is that you can, directly on the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority's own website, for free, in under a minute.

What "PTA approved" actually means

Any device that uses a SIM card or connects to a mobile network – which includes essentially every GPS car tracker sold with "live tracking" or "control room alerts" – needs type approval from the PTA before it can legally operate on Pakistani networks. An approved device has a model number registered in the PTA's own database, tied to the manufacturer and the company holding the approval. A device that is not on that list can, in principle, be blocked from the network – which is exactly the failure mode that defeats the point of buying a tracker in the first place.

How to check a device's PTA approval yourself

  1. Ask your tracker company for the exact device model number before you buy, or find it printed on the unit after installation. Any company confident in its hardware will give you this without hesitation.
  2. Go to the PTA's own type-approval database at pta.gov.pk/approved-equipments – a live, searchable tool, not a static document.
  3. Search by the model number or certificate number. The results show the model, the approving manufacturer, the type-approval holder, the equipment category and the approval date.
  4. If the model is not found, ask the company directly why – a legitimate company should be able to explain or correct the discrepancy, not wave the question away.

This is different from DIRBS (dirbs.pta.gov.pk), which is PTA's mobile phone IMEI registration system – useful for checking a phone, not the right tool for a tracker's type-approval status.

Why so few companies make this easy

Most tracker websites state "PTA approved" as a one-line claim without naming the device model, which makes the claim unverifiable from the outside. That is not necessarily deception – many of these companies likely do hold genuine approvals – but a buyer has no way to confirm it without asking directly, and few people think to ask.

At Car Tracker Company, every device we install is PTA approved; ask our team for the exact model number before or during installation and verify it yourself on the PTA's database using the steps above. We would rather you check than take our word for it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my car tracker is PTA approved?

Ask the installer for the device's exact model number, then search it on the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority's own type-approval database at pta.gov.pk/approved-equipments. If the model appears with an approval date and manufacturer listed, it is PTA approved.

What happens if my tracker is not PTA approved?

An unapproved device using a SIM card can, in principle, be blocked from operating on Pakistani mobile networks, which would stop it from reporting location or receiving commands – defeating the purpose of the tracker.

Is PTA approval the same as DIRBS registration?

No. DIRBS (dirbs.pta.gov.pk) is PTA's mobile phone IMEI registration system. Type approval for tracking devices is checked separately at pta.gov.pk/approved-equipments.

Do all car tracker companies in Pakistan publish their device's model number?

No. Most sites state "PTA approved" without naming the specific device model, which makes the claim hard to verify independently. Always ask the company directly for the model number before buying.
